Raven

Several Hours Later

I can’t sleep like this.

I’d been tossing and turning for an hour now, rolling into Sorin only to start sweating against his heat. Then rolling away from him into Zian, where the old mattress dipped so far beneath his body I felt suffocated from being crammed against his side with no room to move. Even cradling myself on my wings couldn’t keep me from feeling the bump between the two mattresses shoved together.

So I was awake, drifting somewhere between sleep and consciousness and praying for a coma, when I heard the brush of something leathery in the hallway

My eyes popped open, and I stared up at the ceiling overhead, listening intently.

It came again—a slither, maybe the clacking of claws. Mousey Mouse? Or was I imagining it? He didn’t necessarily know that we’d moved cells and could be looking for me.

For the briefest moment, I considered waking my mates, but decided against it. If it turned out I was just hallucinating sounds because I was so damn tired, I’d feel dumb. And if it was Mousey Mouse, he didn’t really get along well with my mates.

I gently climbed to my knees and eased toward the edge of the makeshift bed. Standing, I pulled on a shirt that tied at my neck and slipped on a pair of pants. Then I crept toward the exit.

This new cell had a door that closed, even though part of the ceiling had fallen away during the demonic attack on the mountainside. We’d swept the pile of rubble against the wall, but small rocks and debris still shifted beneath my bare feet as I crossed to the door.

The hallway appeared to be empty. However, the cavernous darkness held a lot of shadows.

Cautiously, I ventured out, glancing left and right, searching the dusty floor for the little Blaze demon.

Instead, I caught sight of white wings with dark tips.

My heart rate kicked up. I eased down the hallway, deeper into the shadows, and they parted to reveal the Reformer.

Standing smack dab in the middle of the prison without a care in the world.

I opened my mouth to scream, to wake up the prison, my mates, a call to arms for everyone to run, but he held up a hand, that mere action freezing me in place. Whether by magic or strength of will alone, I wasn’t sure.

He was my father.

So maybe he possessed an enchanted link to my willpower.

What a terrifying thought.

“Don’t worry,” he said softly in a pitch meant for my ears alone. “I just want to talk.”

I glared at him, wondering if I could kill him with my bare hands since I’d left my weapons in the room. Stupid, Raven. Very stupid. How could I possibly have thought it was Mousy Mouse? Ever since I’d found out his real name was Clyde, he’d been spending more time with Novak than me. I wasn’t even sure we were buddies anymore.

Sayir held up some kind of bundle. “Are you hungry? I brought you a sandwich.”

I eyed the paper-wrapped item as my stomach violently twisted.
